Dale's Field
2007 Summary
Fellow Frizzbee flyers,

Thanks for another great season. 25 years! Who knew that we would keep this going that long? But why not? And why not another 25? Let's do it!

2007 Recap

Thanks again to Tim and Nancy Walker for hosting the traditional season-ending game at their “Sinking Horse Field” and the party afterward. We had nice cool weather and 11 of us enjoyed a spirited game well into darkness, using a lighted disc and glow sticks.

Bill hosted the traditional trophy presentation, with all kinds of awards like Amazing Reach (Andy), Rookie of the Year (Kristi), Phantastic Photographer (Eric) and others that you had to see to appreciate, such as the “Gorilla Disc Rescue” trophy that Ted won for retrieving several lost discs in the thorny bramble bushes. We thought some of those discs were goners, at least until winter arrived.

Barb, one of the few remaining “founding” members of the original Frizzbee club received the Veteran’s award. Barb is retiring this winter, and lives too far away to play with us regularly. Hopefully, she will be able to play once in a while. Right, Barb? Please?

Several people recounted their favorite moments of the last 25 years, such as a Frizzbee matchup resulting in marriage, and car keys being rescued out of a McDonald’s trash bag. But the hands-down favorite was “Dave’s Ultimate Drop.” Bill produced a documentary featuring actual footage and some animation that recounted the two different interpretations of what really happened that day. Watching that video, we laughed so hard that we couldn’t hear most of the audio, even at full volume. We had to watch it at least twice more to catch everything. It was almost as funny as watching Dave’s actual “drop” on that beach day. Maybe funnier! Bill has a link to the movie on the www.frizzbee.com web site. Check it out; you will be amazed! Follow it up by perusing Eric’s amazing photos and you’ll be yearning for more games. Is it spring yet?

2007 Statistics

New Records:

  • It’s hard to set new records after 25 years, but we tied 2 all-time records
    • We tied the record for most games in a season (27) set in 2000 and also tied last year. We were helped by dry Tuesdays (and some Mondays on the beach); we had 21 consecutive games without a rainout. Only a crack statistician would recognize whether or not that too is a record. (Nope, but good for 2nd place! We had 22 straight back in 1995.)
    • Bill tied the record for most individual games in one year [26], also set back in 2000. Too bad Bill goes on vacation when it doesn’t rain on Frizzbee day.
  • We also set the second-highest record for the average number of players per game. Somehow, back in 1999, we averaged 16.7 players per game. This year, even though the most players we had was 22 back on May 22, we averaged 15.3 players per game, blowing past the previous 2nd place mark of “only” 14.5.
Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda

If only we decided to play one more week:

  • We could have broken the all-time record of most games in a season.
  • If that extra game meant we had started one week earlier, we could have broken the record for earliest game ever played, set back in 2000.
  • Depending on who played that extra week, we could have broken all kinds of other cool records. Next year!

Notables

  • Bill won the Frequent Attendance Record Trophy (FART) for the 3rd consecutive year, for most games played: 26. Can anyone challenge him next year?
  • We had 4 players with 20 or more games this year, good for third-most ever. The record is 8 players who had 20+ in 1999.
  • Those same players with 20+ games were the only ones to have streaks of 10 or more games in a row this year. Bill did it twice, only missing one mid-season game to go on vacation. Ara came oh-so-close, playing the last 9 games and 12 out the last 13.
  • We had 57 different players this year, the 4th highest ever. Imagine 69 different players, which is the record set in 2002. The statistician had to work overtime that year.
  • Here are the players with 5 or more games played this year. See if you can beat your numbers next year, and maybe win a trophy! Or, you could just do something outlandish…
