We played 24 games in this, our 27th season, breaking six records along the way. As statistician, I had my hands full keeping track of all the different players. More on that in a bit.
2009 Season Recap
Jon and Denille graciously hosted the season-ending party again. Wonderful food and drink was had by all, followed by many games of Schwag. Did anyone beat George and Jon (Jon the guest, not Jon the host)? Last I knew, they had beat every team that took them on, some of them several times. (I know this too well, including a near shutout when Jon hit 4 buckets in one game, then started out the next game with one.)
Eric set up more of his Ultimate photos on a DVD slideshow, which we ran several times on the big screen. And we all enjoyed watching “Dave’s Ultimate Drop” video once again.
Bill hosted the traditional trophy presentation, which you must be present to win. This year’s trophies included:

2009 Statistics
New Records:
Six all-time records were set in 2009, starting with…
- The earliest Beach Day ever, by a large margin: April 28. Remember that crazy day? We hit highs over 90 in many spots. Too bad we had such high winds. The earliest we played at the beach before was June 10, 1986: 23 years ago!
- Tom Merrick came to the beach this summer to once again set the all-time oldest player record. Does anybody else plan to play at age 72? If so, Tom will come back to play, just to make it harder to catch him. By the way: Happy (somewhat belated) 73rd Birthday, Tom!
- Note that Tom’s other record of oldest “regular” player is in jeopardy in the forthcoming years, as Tom played 10 games when he was “only” 62. Our “new” old timer has his eyes on that prize. Check back in 2012.
- Even though we only had 5 players on a cold, wet May 5, we set the record for highest average number of players per game: 17.9. That beats the previous record of 16.7 in 1999, which I thought was unbeatable. OK, I now think that 17.9 is unbeatable. Prove me wrong!
- One way we broke that attendance record was by setting the record for most number of 20+ players games: 11. That shatters the previous record of 6, set in 1999.
- We also had the most number of different players: 78. That beats previous record of 69 in 2002. Maybe this is another “unbeatable” stat.
- And the most number of new players: 38, beating the previous record of 32 in 2006. That seems unbeatable, too.
Notables
- We almost broke the record of most player appearances, with 429. But we played 26 games back in 1999, and those 2 extra games helped set the record of 434 which still stands.
- Kurt set the second highest total of games for a “new” player at 17. Dusty holds the record of 20, set back in 1998. (Gene and Judy: you’re now tied for third, with Ethan at 4th.)
- We had two games with 26 players, tying for second place of most players in a game. That is still a far cry from when we had 34 players show up on a beautiful beach day in 2002 for the record that still stands.
- Dale, Dave, and Jon (we need good nicknames to distinguish Jon from “Cap’n” Jon) had streaks of 10 or more consecutive games played this year.
- May I remind you of one truly unbeatable record? Nobody, I mean nobody, is ever going to beat Bill’s record of 54 games in a row.
- Several players ended with a flourish, with Jeff and Kurt playing the last 8/8 games, Dale and Ara played the last 5/5, George played the last 7/8 and Eric the last 6/7.
