2012 Season's Highlights

Provided by our esteemed statistician, Dale
Hi Frizzbee Friends,

What a season we had this year, capped off by another fun season-ending party Tuesday night. Thanks to Pete and Habi for hosting the party again this year.

Your loyal statistician was very busy this year, as all kinds of new records were set, some of which I thought were almost unbreakable.

Take a look at the following list of records and near-records, and I think you will agree that we had a stellar season:

  • We started the season with a bang, with the earliest start ever on March 20. That's more than 2 weeks earlier than previous record of April 4 set in 2000. Remember that amazingly warm weather we had in March?
  • May was a different story, with way too much Tuesday rain for our taste. We had a record number of consecutive rainouts: 4 in a row, all in May. We finally got a game in on May 29.
  • We ended up having 3 more rainouts for a total of 7, a new record that beat the previous record of 5 set just last year. This better not be a trend.
  • We had an amazing number of players this year: a record-shattering 89 different players! That seems almost impossible, and breaks the previous record of 78 set in 2009.
  • An even more difficult number to break was the number of new players: we had a record number of 41 new (to us) players. That breaks the previous record of 38, also set in 2009.
  • And we broke the grandaddy of attendance records: the total number of player appearances in a season: 441. The previous record of 434 was set back in 1999.
  • We played a ton of games (a record-tying 27 games) even though we had 7 rainouts and tied for the 2nd-earliest season ending (October 9). Imagine if it hadn't rained!
  • How did we do this? We played a record number of Tuesday-Thursday combinations (4), with a Tuesday Tewksbury game and a Thursday beach game.
  • We had a record number of "streakers" this year, with 7 different players having 10 or more games in a row. That breaks the previous record of 5 players, set in 1999. The 3 rainouts in Sept-Oct kept me from joining that group; I missed it by 1.
  • We just missed the record for players with 20+ games, with 7. The record number of 8 was set in 1999. With a little less rain late in the year, Tinu and Brian would likely have helped us break that record.
  • We had the second highest number of players in a game, with 31 on July 9. The record of 34 set in 2002 still stands.
  • We had the third highest average players per game, with 16.3. It's hard to imagine breaking the record of 17.9 set in 2009.

Those are just the team records. We also have a slew of individual records and near-records:

  • Pete tied the record for most games in a season, with 26. Bill had set this record back in 2000 and then tied it in 2007.
    • Pete's percentage of games played was 2nd-highest, eclipsed only by Bill's 2 seasons of perfect attendance back in 1996 and 1997.
    • Jeff's 24 games this year was good for 3rd all time.
  • Pete also had an amazing streak this year: 24 consecutive games played. That's 3rd best all time, and Pete is now only the 2nd player to have played 20+ games in a row. Bill's incredible record of 54 seems untouchable, but who knows? Pete's streak is still alive, so the next step is Bill's 2nd place streak of 26.
  • Dave broke Tom Merrick's record for oldest regular player (5+ games/season). Tom's record was set in 1999 when he was just 62. Dave still has quite a ways to go to beat Tom's record for oldest player in a game. Play on, old timer!
  • John C set a strange duo of records (of sorts) this year: the longest gap in attendance (and longest gap in regular play), with a 17 year gap for both. This beats Tinu's record gap in regular play of 13 years set last year. Sherry also had a gap of attendance this year of 14 years. Is this also a new trend?
  • After having shoulder surgery last year and only playing 2 games, I said that I would beat that this year. I'm happy to report that I did, and in so doing I think I've set another strange record: biggest increase year-to-year (19 games). It's probably best not to make this a trend.

As always, here is the list of the (26) regular players this season, with 5 or more games played. Hmm, I wonder what the record number of regular players is... (probably 29, set in 2009).
