Hello and Happy New Year! I spoke with Biller recently and the 2022 season (the 40th season!!) appears to be done and over, and so with that in mind – a stats summary for you all. Bear with me as I try to pick up the torch passed on by Dale after so many years of stats awesomeness. Many thanks to Dale for keeping such fantastic records over the years! (If something doesn’t appear correct, let me know – that goes for everyone!)
Not a lot of broken records this year, but a few to note:
- Highest number of games played – 37, passing 33 in 2021
- Latest season ending – November 22, 2022, passing November 16, 2021
- Largest number of consecutive games without a rainout (contained to one season) – 35, passing 28 in 2016 (And, we’ll only need 8 games without a rainout to start next season to beat the current cross-season record for consecutive games without a rainout!)
Also, a couple ‘runner-up’ records:
- 3rd highest number of new players in a season – 50, following 60 in 2013 and 54 in 2016
- 3rd highest number of beach games – 7, following 9 in 2021 and 8 in 1986
- Tied for 3rd highest number of players at a season opener – 24, following 28 in 2017 and 25 in 2019
From an overall perspective, a few season stats:
- Total player appearances: 628
- Unique player appearances: 95
- Average players per game: 17.0
- Regular players (5+ games): 35 people
- Super regular players (20+ games): 10 people
- New Category Needed???? (30+ games): 4 people (up from 2 last year)
And a few individual records:
- Dave continues to break his own record for oldest regular player and, as of the first game this season, now holds the record for oldest player to play any game! Keep it up, Dave!
- Dave also played his second highest number of games this year, at 23.
- Becky now holds the record for most games played in a single season – 35, passing Bill’s 32 from 2021. (Deanna and Elliot also beat the previous record this year, with 33 and 34 games respectively.)
- This also makes Becky this season’s Frequent Attendance Record Trophy holder, taking the trophy back from Biller, who won the award in 2021 with 32 games!
- Biller now has the highest ever 5-year average of games played, at 27.6 games/year the last 5 years.
- The following people all had their highest number of games in a single season – Collin (25), Dan (28), Deanna (33), Becky (35), Tinu (24), Elliot (34), Nira (27), and Bill (Tied at 32). Congrats!
In the category of ‘movers and shakers:’
- Notable increases in games played this year were Harrison (+19), John N. (+17), and Elliot (+13)
- Notable decreases in games went to Mike C. (-18) and Kevin C. (-15)
A hearty congratulations to the 4 people who played more than 30 games this season – Biller, Deanna, Elliot, and Becky, and the 6 additional people who played more than 20 games this season – Dan, Nira, Dave, Collin, Tinu, and Eric. Very well done. (Harrison, if you’re out there, you JUST missed this by 1 game – maybe next year??)
With regards to consistency, in the ‘Super Consistent‘ category (regular players who have played at least 100 games and averaged at least 10 games per year), we have 15 people who qualify! Pete and Jeff A. fell out of the group, as they are no longer regular players. Dan joins the group this year, having passed 100 games! (Collin needs only 12 games next season to join this group!) Iron….. Person? Iron-Clad? ‘Officially’ Iron Man
Historically, an Iron Man is a (male) player who has played 20 or more games in each of 5 consecutive years. Bill, Pete, Dale, and Bob have achieved this in the past, with Bill remaining a current Iron Man through 2022, now joined by the 5th ever (and 1st female) Iron Woman(?), Becky! But keep an eye on 2 contenders – Elliot needs only one 20+ game season to join these ranks; Deanna needs only two.
