It is us against the sun. We can win by starting earlier. Plus, the sun gets a “Bozo” for wearing yellow.

Last week, we nearly had a “Bozo” situation. Historically, we’ve only lost discs due to errant throws that plunge into what has grown up to be Pricker Heaven. This happens with a groan of the crowd and humility to the thrower. Last week, a normal line drive pass zooming into the endzone was decisively deflected by Kit. Without slowing it down, Kit added a vertical vector which projected the disc up and, “oh no”, into the bush. A hoard of disc lovers descended to rescue the 30 yr. commemorative limited edition disc. Eric was shaking the bushes like King Kong. JJ was tunnelling through like a rabbit. Bob was clamoring for a flashlight and answered his own question, “Who has a flashlight; I have one in my car.” All this and no disc was found! The rest of us decided to finish the game-to-5. Success there. I think it was a 5-4 match. Still, the rescue team had not found the victom. With the game decided, I moseyed over to the disaster scene. Without stepping 1 foot into the bush, I reached in at eye-level with 1 hand and retrieved the healthy disc. Yay for me!
Thus, we defer the rhetorical question: Would Kit have deserved a “Bozo” for losing a disc due to a block?

See you Tuesday Oct 1st at the Tewksbury field at 5:30 (or earlier).

Next game Tuesday, Sept 24 at 5:30

I know some will get there earlier. That’s great. We’ll target 5:30, but we can start playing when we get a quorum.

Last week’s play of the week was a late evening pass from JJ to Noah. It wasn’t one of those “floater in the endzone” passes that hangs in wait for a superstar to get to it. This was a perfectly arched, half-field long pass beautifully executed to hit Noah deep in the endzone on the parking lot side. Wait, there is no “deep” to the endzone on that side. Noah had a decision to make. Go for it and get swallowed by the pricker laced plants (and slam into the fence), or abort. Noah did neither. He was going full throttle straight towards the fence. He reached up high with both hands and managed to catch it at the bush line. And.. somehow decelerated and stopped upright with his face just a little buried in the bush. I think he might have kissed the bush in gratitude.

Next game, Tuesday, Sept 17th

This week looks more like fall. Less sweat. Fewer mosquitoes.

Kitt earns the catch of the week. He already owned that title with his first endzone layout in the gully by the fire station. It was a beauty with Kitt gliding inches off the the ground to reach out and snag the disc. Later, at the opposite end of the field, the defense was making it difficult to score. Kitt, powered by one of his micro-bursts of acceleration, zipped across the endzone and quickly layed out to save an out of bounds throw. But this was no routine layout and catch. The disc was thrown sharply from near the sideline and it had angled itself to be well out of bounds by the time it crossed the goal line. Kitt had so much speed from his micro-burst, again, his body shot out pencil straight and he layed out inches off the ground. With arms fully outstretched, Kitt had the wherewithal of a seasoned NFL receiver to drag his toes to keep them inbounds as his fingers latched out onto the disc for the score. We were stunned in amazement. I see this one as the catch of the year! Go Kitt!

Next Game: Tuesday Sept. 10th

The more comfortable fall weather is here! Sweat a little less at the Tewksbury field this Tuesday Sept. 10th at 6:00.

Catch of the week goes to Roger. Deep in the endzone, he went up against the Leapin’ Lizard. As usual, the battle began in the air where the disc took a hit from Leapin’. It must have been good position on Roger’s part that thwarted the usual solid interception or smashing block. The disc fluttered and tumbled end over end. Roger, the first of the 3 to hit the ground, was on all fours and scrambled to move toward the decending round butterfly. With a couple of scooches and gropes, he got under it and pulled the disc into his chest. 3 seconds later, JJ returned to earth to see that this battle was won by Roger for the catch of the day.
